Is it vermiculite?
Granules spread loose across the joists point to vermiculite, while batts and blown fiber look different. Until you know for sure, stay out of the attic and keep storage boxes elsewhere.
Typical cost in Coon Rapids
If the attic fill pours like gravel and comes in light brown, gray or gold, it may be vermiculite. Zonolite was a common brand. MDH says to leave it in place as long as nothing stirs it up, and to hand any removal to a licensed contractor. When the attic is due for new insulation, wiring or air sealing, we take the fill out first.
We work in attics across Coon Rapids, Anoka and Fridley.

As long as nothing disturbs it, MDH is fine with the fill staying where it is. Adding insulation, putting in recessed lights or working on the ceiling below changes the picture.
First the hatch gets sealed and the rooms under the attic are covered in plastic. With negative air running, the fill is moved into bags, which are labeled and sealed shut, and the plastic stays up until the air sample results are back.
Bare joists make the next steps simpler.
With the old fill gone, the insulation contractor can air seal the attic floor and lay in new insulation over clear joists.
If the ceiling under the attic will be opened, its plaster or texture may need a sample of its own.

Old ducts in the attic as well? Ducts are handled under pipe, duct and furnace insulation removal. For testing, flooring and the rest of what we do, start from the home page.
