Sampling for a remodel
We sample only what the work will reach. A basement finish might mean the ceiling, the floor tile and any wrapped ducts overhead. If the plan changes, we add samples to match it.

Opening a wall or lifting a floor without testing means guessing about what is inside. We arrange for an MDH-certified inspector to collect samples from the parts of your home the project will reach. An accredited lab tests each sample, and the written report gives you a result for every one, which is what we plan and price from.
Testing is open to owners, landlords and builders in Coon Rapids, Anoka and Fridley.

Sampling for a remodel covers only the work area, but a teardown is all or nothing. Before any structure is demolished, MPCA requires inspection by an MDH-certified inspector, so every room, the siding and the roof all get looked at.
The lab has to be accredited, either through NVLAP or through the AIHA bulk asbestos program, before we send it anything. Its job is to measure how much asbestos each sample holds, and in Minnesota more than 1 percent makes a material asbestos-containing and puts it on the removal list. Results under that line still come back in writing, so you have a record for every material.
Was your home built after October 1988? Then the inspection may not be needed. If the architect or contractor will put in writing that no asbestos went into the build, MDH takes that letter instead. Close to a fifth of Coon Rapids homes date from the 1990s, so we ask early whether one exists for yours.
There is no Minnesota rule saying every home project has to be tested first. A survey or inspection is required in the cases below, and every teardown needs the inspection described above.
If a company sends employees to do demolition, remodeling or restoration, a state worker rule applies. The employer has to get a qualified person to survey the building first wherever asbestos may be present. So a remodeler with a crew in your Coon Rapids house needs that survey before the crew starts.
Public and commercial buildings play by a different rule. Their age is beside the point, so a ten-year-old office and a seventy-year-old school both have to be inspected before anyone renovates or demolishes them.
