Duct wrap and register boots
Insulation on supply ducts and on the boots behind floor or wall registers is sampled before a furnace swap or duct change.

Heating pipes, boilers, furnaces and ductwork can all carry insulation that contains asbestos, and MDH names each of them. When a lab confirms it, we strip the insulation wet, seal it in bags and leave the metal bare for your heating contractor.
Pipe insulation has its own legal limit. Once a home job takes out more than 10 linear feet of friable pipe insulation, Minnesota law requires an MDH-licensed contractor (apart from the owner exemption), even if the wrapped section looks small and harmless. We do this work in furnace rooms, utility rooms and basements in Coon Rapids, Anoka and Fridley.

Hot-water and steam pipes, their fittings and boiler jackets are wetted and cut free in short lengths before the plumber starts.
The white tape sealing duct seams is its own material. We send it to the lab separately, since a clean or positive result on the wrap tells you nothing about the tape.
A few feet of pipe wrap may fall below the state threshold, but MDH warns that unregulated does not mean safe. We still remove it inside a sealed work area.
Before we seal the area, we agree a shutoff time for the furnace or boiler with you and the HVAC contractor.
Clear stored boxes from the furnace room and from the path to the door, so sealed bags have a clear way out.
MDH tells homeowners to ask for the waste manifest and the air-sampling lab report. You get both from us when the job is done.

Unsure what the wrap is? See asbestos testing first, or the home page.
